Trustee role description

Role summary

  • Will work together with other Trustees to provide leadership and strategic direction to the organisation;

  • Ensure that MASS Actions meets its charitable objectives as laid out in the articles of association;

  • Ensure that MASS Action is effectively run to meet its legal and regulatory requirements;

  • Ensure that the organisation is accountable financially and in other ways; and

  • Take on specific roles as required for the smooth operation of the Board of Trustees and the organisation.

Prospective Specialist Areas for Trustees

Fundraising

  • Organise and support the organisation of events that will raise money for MASS Action

  • Develop a database of regular donors whose contributions provide stability to ongoing projects

  • Reach out to civil society groups for solidarity donations

  • Apply for grants so that the organisation can grow and take on more projects

Human resources

  • Provide administrative support through ensuring legal documents are sent on time, answering emails and responding to official enquirers

  • Developing internal policy to make sure that finances are transparent, in line with the directions of the Treasurer

Activism

  • Promote the political goals of MASS Action through trade unions, political parties and other civil society groups

  • Empower the voices of the beneficiaries of the charity within the group and society at large

  • Speak on behalf of the group in relation to media events and other relevant areas where we can contribute knowledge

Person specification

Desirable

  • Experience of one or more of the above sectors/roles

  • A strong belief and accompanying commitment to see the goals of MASS Action achieved

  • Lived experience of the issues that we work and campaign around

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of the Board to further the organisation’s aims

  • Knowledge and understanding of international migration and current issues affecting it, including experience of displacement

  • Leadership and facilitation skills, ability to motivate staff and volunteers and bring people together

  • Knowledge of foreign languages including but not limited to; Greek, Arabic, Farsi, Sorani, Kurmanji, Pashtu or Aramaic 

  • A non-hierarchical approach to problem solving and to management.

Time commitment

  • The Board meets at least 2 times a year and a Trustee is expected to be available both times each year

  • You will have a large scope to develop your role as you see fit in order to maximise benefit to the charity

  • You will be able to complete the tasks you agree define your role consistently, for the minimum period of one year

Expenses

  • The charity will cover expenses related to the carrying out of this role e.g. travel to and from meetings, costs of printing and posting documents and other reasonable costs
