GDWG supports people through personalised casework, offering trained volunteer-visitors who visit someone each week for the time they are detained, and practical support including phone credit and clothing. When someone is released from detention, they are invited to join their walking community, Refugee Tales, which calls for an end to indefinite detention, and walks in solidarity with those who are detained or have experienced detention. Many people are released from detention to destitution. During the pandemic GDWG recognised an increasing post-detention need for support and started their destitution fund to meet this need. MASS Action are supporting the destitution fund with £4,000, enabling GDWG to send monthly supermarket vouchers to people released from detention for a period of 3 months. This round, we’ve allocated £36,000 (or €42000) to cover the end of their 2022 budget. This grant will be used to cover the increased cost in utilities, some major repairs in the kitchen, and their return to regular services following a few years of stripped back services due to Covid-19. The Khora kitchen serves thousands of meals a week to migrants, refugees, and other community members. The kitchen is a space where people can relax, socialize, meet people from different backgrounds, and build community ties over food and various activities. Khora also operates a free shop, where people can choose clothes, shoes, and essential toiletries in a typical shopping experience.
